Tidung Island

Tidung Island is the biggest island in Kepulauan Seribu. The island is about 109 ha and inhabited with approximately 5000 people. The name of Pulau Tidung comes from Tidung, which means a shelter. Long ago this island was rarely used and then only as a place where people could take shelter from pirates, so it is called “Tidung island”.

According to the book of Djakarta’s history published in 1960 or 1970, it stated that when Fatahillah attacked Portuguese in Malaka, he used the islands in the bay of Jakarta (Teluk Jakarta) as a base place to arrange his strategies; one of them was Pulau Tidung. Referring to the people, Tidung has been inhabited around 1920 and there was a guard from Rawa Belong, West Jakarta. In 1942 (when Japanese colonize came to Indonesia). The people were evacuated to Tegal Alur, West Jakarta. The evacuation lasted for 3 years, and then in 1945 they returned to Tidung as the Japanese invention ended. Tidung is becoming central of the Sub district in South Kepulauan Seribu under 3 district administrations: Pari Island, Untung Jawa & Tidung. Tidung Island spreads from west to east and becomes 2 islands (big Tidung & small Tidung). Favorite places to visit include: - The bridge connecting Tidung Island & Small Tidung Island. It is named “Love Bridge”. It is the favorite gathering place for tourists. The bridge spreads about 2,5 km to Small Tidung. It is an awesome and exotic sight. Many people gather to take pictures. Its also a great place to watch the sunrise or sunset. - Tanjongan Timor Beach. The beach is close to the bridge. Visitors usually spend time swimming, playing volley ball or enjoying the beautiful white sands of this beach. There are also many food and drink stalls catering to the beach goers. - Tanjung Barat Beach. The location is at the end of west Tidung Island. It is about 2 km from central Tidung Island and not many tourists know this spot because of location off the beaten path. However, it is wonderful place to enjoy the sunset. This beach is a favorite get away for those seeking a more private setting, while enjoying a beautiful sunset. - Betok Harbor. The location is in the south east of Tidung Island. It is the main harbor where ships anchor. It is the place where the tourists arrive and depart. This location is also used as fishing spot or even just sitting on the long chairs to spend the night. - Small Tidung Island. There is no population here even there is an official farming office. It looks natural and green surrounded by coconut trees along the street. There is a Panglima Hitam’s (the black commander) grave in the point of this island. This island has been crowded since the government had built the bridge connecting to Tidung Island.
